Unlocking the Power of Figma Components

When it comes to UX/UI design, harnessing the potential of Figma’s components is crucial for elevating the quality of our projects. By leveraging these powerful tools, we can establish a standardized framework, ensuring optimal efficiency and consistency in our creative endeavors.

The Difference Between Figma Components and Instances

To utilize a component, we can simply duplicate it or call it from the left sidebar: Assets > Local Components. An instance will appear in our workspace, easily identifiable by the diamond-shaped icon in the left sidebar, under the Layers section. Meanwhile, the main components are marked by four solid diamonds. Instances cannot be modified entirely, as they are subordinate to the main component.

Methods for Undoing Components and Instances

Sometimes, it’s necessary to detach the connection between our instance and the main component to apply modifications. Here are two methods to do so:

Method 1: Detach an Instance

  1. Select the instance to detach.
  2. Click on Instance Options, located in the right sidebar.
  3. Click on Detach Instance.

Method 2: Detach an Instance

  1. Select the instance > right-click > Detach Instance.

Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl or Cmd + Alt + B to detach the instance.

Recovering a Principal Component Through an Instance

If you accidentally delete a main component, you can easily recover it by selecting one of the connected instances and pressing the Restore Component button on the right sidebar.

Changing an Instance of a Component in Nested Components

When making changes to an instance of a component with nested components, it’s essential to understand which nested instances will be modified and which ones won’t. To modify an instance without disconnecting it from its main component, select one of the nested instances and detach it using the same procedure.

Canceling Modifications on an Instance

If you need to restore an instance to its original characteristics, select the instance > Instance Options > Reset all changes. This will return the instance to its original appearance.

Undoing One or More Components

Figma plugins, such as Detach Component, allow you to undo one or more groups of components (variants) without excessive steps. Simply select the group of components, open the plugin panel, and activate the Detach Component plugin.

By mastering these techniques, you’ll be able to efficiently manage your Figma components and instances, ensuring a harmonious fusion of uniformity and innovation in your designs.
